Months ago, Mary watched the neighbors she never knew move away from the house across the street. Her heart was still, until that day, when a U-Haul truck pulled up late in the afternoon. Out from the driver's side came a tall, young man with gorgeous auburn hair. Over the next few hours, she watched as he and his friend moved things into the house. In those hours, she saw him smile, she heard him talk - he had a southern accent - and best of all, she heard him laugh. A sweet giggle, it was. As the days passed into months, her heart grew for the neighbor she knew virtually nothing about. Through the lace curtains in her upstairs bedroom, she'd see him come and go, performing the mundane chores of life - bring in groceries, mow the lawn, wash the car. Some days she noticed he wouldn't come home until late. She assumed he was out dating the lovely young available women of the town. Mary knew she was shy, but she never knew just how much of a recluse she was until he arrived. Though her outward demeanor didn't show it, the effect he had on her was potent. She began wanting more out of life than what was between the four walls of her home. She wanted him. She even grabbed her front doorhandle a few times, trying so hard to will herself to walk across the street, ring his doorbell and say hello - just to be neighborly. As the weather warmed, she made a trip to the local nursery, picking up a few pretty purple and pink flowers for the little bed near the front door. It was the one real bit of gardening she did in the front yard - just once a year - and she let the lawn service do the rest. With an old, red bandana on to protect her head and neck from the midday sun, she dumped a couple bags of mulch in the bed, then on her knees she tilled and turned the soil. Hunched over the bed, she made holes for her bright flowers. As she reached for the first pot, she was startled by a pair of long legs very close by. - - - - - Have something to say? Comment here.
